“Kundalini yoga is known as the yoga of awareness. It is predicated on the thought that our life force energy sits at the base of the spine, curled up like a snake.”

History of Kundalini Yoga

The concept of Kundalini energy, or life force, can be traced back to the Vedic texts of ancient India. Despite references to Kundalini in these sacred texts, the true origin point of Kundalini remains a mystery. For thousands of years the practice was kept secret until Yogi Bhajan brought it to the West.

While there are unfortunate allegations against Yogi Bhajan, I believe that the practice is greater than one person. Its main purpose (like so many conscious practices) is to provide us with tools to connect, clear, and channel our energy. And, the concepts found in Kundalini yoga mirror other mystical and Indigenous practices around the world.

Kundalini Yoga Concepts + Fundamentals

Kundalini yoga is known as the yoga of awareness. It is predicated on the thought that our life force energy sits at the base of the spine, curled up like a snake. The term kundal in Sanskrit means circular or coiled, alluding to this divine energy.

Through Kundalini practice, we awaken this life force energy, moving it throughout the body to clear blocks or stagnation. When energy is blocked from a continuous, easeful flow, we can experience physical, emotional, and spiritual dis-ease.

Each Kundalini class is based on a kriya, a set of exercises and meditations focused around a theme. Class themes are often rooted  in the chakra system, or the bodies main energy centers. Kundalini classes are a unique combination of breath work, meditation, mindful movement, sound (like chanting and music), and deep relaxation. It is a beautiful invitation to slow down, look inward, and connect with a deeper consciousness.

Kundalini classes focus around themes like:

  • accessing your intuition

  • self love and the heart center

  • grounding with Mother Earth

  • clearing blocks for vibrant health

  • protecting your aura (energetic field)

  • setting intentions in alignment with the moon phase + cosmos
